Tradition says that the world began as a watery chaos called Nun. The Sun-god, Ra, crawled out of the water onto a mound of dirt. Out of his own power, he created Shu (the god of Air). Shu gave birth to Geb (the god of Earth) and Nut (the god of the Sky). From these four original gods, other gods were created. The Ancient Egyptians came to believe that the universe was made up of the air-god, Shu, carrying the out-stretched body of the sky-goddess, Nut, with the earth-god, Geb, lying at her feet.
