To A Lady

Should I have told thee, in all truth,
Laid all I could ever hope, on the thinnest of lines,
Waiting for the winds to break the thread of silence,
My desire that thee would equally love,
With as great a passion, as I do love thee.
But barest of chance, I caught the glance,
That forewarned caution to me,
For should I endeavor, for hopes of forever,
Would I find out most sorrowfully
The truth of meaning, in never.
Thus warned, thus fearing, I say not the words,
And should thee in some circumstance have heard
Would it then be thro' these eyes,
The traitor I could not disguise,
That would speak in rightful courage the tale,
That lips longed to utter, yet fail,
To tell, of my hidden love for thee.
